Selenite is a variety of gypsum that is extremely soft and can be easily scratched with your fingernail. The name selenite comes from the Greek word Selen, meaning moon. When it forms in a fibrous nature like this it is called Satin Spar Selenite, and it is very cool looking stone. When seen from the side, light reflects off of the side and looks great, and when seen on the top or bottom, light is transmitted through the fibers, like fiber optics.
